Canadian actress Kathleen Robertson says she was drawn to new Bravo series “Murder in the First” because it’s about the “haves and the have-nots.”

She plays tough San Francisco homicide cop Hildy Mulligan, who investigates a murder that appears to involve Internet wunderkind and billionaire Erich Blunt (Tom Felton). Robertson said she was fascinated by the show’s exploration of modern class disparities.

“San Francisco is a city that displays that better than any city in America,” she said in a phone interview. “The extreme wealth in that city and the extreme poverty is so prevalent, and that’s very much thematically something we delve into.”

Murder in the First also stars Taye Diggs as Mulligan’s partner, Terry English, who is dealing with his wife’s terminal illness. The pair investigate a single murder case throughout the entire 10-episode first season, a structure popularized by shows like True Detective and The Killing.

Robertson compared watching the whodunit series, which airs Monday nights on Bravo, to “reading a great book.”

“It has a very clear beginning, middle and end, and a very clear first, second and third act. It’s like watching a big, giant movie,” she said. “It was definitely one of the reasons I wanted to do this show. I love the structure, personally.”

KRISTIN: The cast on this show is incredible to say the least. Taye Diggs & Kathleen Robertson are playing the lead detectives and Tom Felton playing the suspect, along with many, many more. What has it been like working with this cast?

RAPHAEL SBARGE: Yeah, I mean it’s that weird thing you can’t buy, which is chemistry. You can do everything well intended but at the end of the day they may not gel. We have incredible chemistry, which is really cool. That’s also to say the rest of us really sort of fell in line. Good leadership is felt at the top. If everyone feels there is strong leadership at the top everyone feels comfortable and feels the ship is going in the right direction. That transfers into a sense of ease. We are going in the right direction. And it feels good.

Well it helps that everyone is just lovely people. Tom is… I’m a huge harry potter fan. I was excited to see him. My OMG! He told me he started doing all those movies at 11. My daughter is 11. She read the 1st harry potter books when she was in 1st grade. I was really excited to see him. Plus he plays a great bad guy. And he’s such a sweetheart! We hung out on set and he had such a sweet dog. She was on the set all the time. He was just a fun guy to be around. We all had a blast. In addition to that, Taye is so easy going. Kathleen is so smart and always on her game. I love working with her. She’s a stunner. So bright, so beautiful, so together, and so on her game. And she has so many different looks. Some people are a chameleon, even in the role they are in, and have multiple looks. She is that person for sure. That speaks for her and her as a person. And so many more. All these amazing people under one flag. It was really cool. And yes there was chemistry in the beginning.

One of the things to explain how this works, if we are lucky enough to do this again, what will happen is a new case will come in and the core group of us, Taye, Kathleen, Ian and a few other characters will be a part of the core group, legal team, detective, DA, everything, that are then solving the case. That means there are a whole bunch of new actors to come in. What was interesting is that we got to go out and practice. We went to cop school, ride-alongs, firing range, learned how to taser, and take people down. We, of course, had an expert on set with us too. Then we came in and rehearsed and did the scene and from the very first scene it felt like we have been doing it for a long time. I don’t really remember feeling that before… like all four legs of the stool are intact. You can sit and feel that you are supported. It happened almost instantly. We all started commenting on the second episode. We all fell right into it. It’s been utterly delightful.

You spend a lot of time together day after day. It sure helps when you get along. It’s tough when you don’t.
